The Digitaal kompas project, awarded by the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek through the Nationaal Kennisinstituut Onderwijs, focuses on enhancing the critical AI literacy of pre-service primary school teachers. Recognizing that AI presents both opportunities for academic success and risks such as diminished critical thinking and the spread of misinformation, the initiative aims to bridge the gap in teacher preparation as AI becomes integrated into primary school curricula. To achieve this, the project will implement a creative, design-oriented curriculum track. By utilizing reflection tools, provocative prototypes, and educational design, the program seeks to transform future educators into ethically aware and competent professionals capable of navigating a digitized educational landscape.

AI has an impact on the studies and future professional practice of pre-service primary school teachers. Although AI can support study success, it also entails potential risks such as a decline in critical thinking and uncritical adoption of misinformation. Simultaneously, AI is becoming part of the primary school curriculum for which students feel insufficiently prepared. This project therefore develops a creative, design-oriented curriculum track for critical AI literacyy. Through reflection tools, provocative prototypes, and educational design, pre-service teachers can develop into ethically aware, competent, and AI-critical education professionals.
