The National Cancer Institute, under the National Institutes of Health, is soliciting applications for solicitation PAR-28-014 to investigate the causes and biological mechanisms of sporadic non-hereditary early-onset cancers in adults aged 18 to 49. The primary goal of this initiative is to understand the rising incidence of these cancers to improve prevention and control strategies. Research should specifically target environmental or lifestyle drivers across various demographics, the biological host responses involved, or the development of more effective methods for identifying high-risk individuals. This funding opportunity supports both standard research projects and exploratory or developmental studies through a grant award instrument, with clinical trials being optional. Interested parties must submit their applications by the deadline of October 12, 2029.

Full Description

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications that investigate the etiology of sporadic non-hereditary early-onset cancers (EOCs: ages 18 to 49 years) and the underlying biological mechanisms that play a role in these cancers to inform prevention and control strategies. The proposed research is expected to advance the understanding of the unexplained rise of cancers in young adults. More specifically, studies should focus on one or more of the following: i) identifying what environmental or lifestyle exposures are driving the increase in the incidence of non-hereditary EOCs, and how these factors vary by patient demographics; ii) examining the biological mechanisms and host responses that underlie the increase in EOCs; and iii) identifying how those at increased risk of developing EOCs can be identified more effectively. In an effort to streamline the application process and sustain momentum in this critical research area, this NOFO supports both exploratory/developmental and standard research projects through a grant award instrument.

Limited Competition: Biospecimen Banks to support NCI National Clinical Trials Network Biospecimen Banks (NCTN Biobanks) and the NCI Early-Phase and Experimental Clinical Trials Biospecimen Bank (EET Biobank) (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Solicitation # RFA-CA-28-004
The National Cancer Institute is issuing a limited competition Notice of Funding Opportunity, solicitation RFA-CA-28-004, to support the continuation of two critical biospecimen banking resources. These resources include the National Clinical Trials Network Biobanks, which support the NCTN and the Community Oncology Research Program, and the Early-Phase and Experimental Clinical Trials Biospecimen Bank, which supports the ETCTN and other early-phase experimental trials. The primary objective is to maintain national infrastructure for the collection, processing, storage, and distribution of high-quality, clinically annotated human biospecimens to enable translational cancer research, biomarker development, and the study of drug response and resistance. Eligible organizations must submit applications by February 12, 2027, to be considered for funding. All submissions will undergo a standard NIH peer-review process, and only meritorious applications will be selected. These banks are essential for linking biospecimens to clinical outcome data from large multi-site trials and supporting the development of novel cancer therapies through pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analyses.
