The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes an emergency hazard tree removal at three locations. Work will consist of removing dead/hazard trees from the proximity of the roadway, where they pose an immediate danger to the traveling public.
Location 1 is on Route-199 in Del Norte County at postmiles (PM) 2.6 - 2.9, The habitat within this location is coastal, late-seral (old-growth) coast redwood forest, adjacent to SR-DN-199 and Walker Road. The estimated the area where the hazard tree will be removed is 0.16 acres. This location also includes repaving the roadway surface (~800 linear feet). Walker Road will be utilized as a staging area for equipment and parking.
Location 2 is on Route-254 in Humboldt County at PM 14.3. The habitat within this location is interior, late-seral coast redwood forest adjacent to the South Fork Eel River. The estimated area is approximately 0.14 acres.
Location 3 is on Route-254 in Humboldt County at PM 17.8. The habitat within this location is interior, late-seral coast redwood forest adjacent to the South Fork Eel River. The estimated area is approximately 0.10 acres.
The purpose of this project is to remove hazard trees (dead or leaning) that are at risk of falling during extreme weather events and should be removed to prevent loss of life or property and immediate action is required. Emergency removal of trees and minor repair work to the roadway surface is needed to minimize the extent of damage and protect the roadway from further damage.
