Health Canada operates a laboratory in the Longueuil area. The operation of this laboratory generates a variety of hazardous materials and biomedical waste, the disposal and destruction of which are regulated by federal, provincial and municipal laws.
It is the intention of Health Canada to meet all current and proposed legislation with respect to the tracking, generation, packaging, collection, transportation, disposal and incineration of the hazardous waste materials, as well as improve the safety and efficiency with which the materials are managed.
Health Canada requires the services of a qualified service provider for the collection, tracking, transportation and disposal of hazardous materials, including chemical and biomedical waste. It is important to note that biomedical waste may contain additional contaminants, such as chemical substances, which must be incinerated in Canada, in a secure landfill, in accordance with all applicable federal, provincial and municipal regulations, including those of the Ministère de l'Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques de la Faune et des parcs du Québec, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada.
For the purposes of this requirement, a secure landfill site is defined as a site registered to receive materials under the Biomedical Waste Regulation and the Regulation respecting the control of activities based on their impact on the environment (REAFIE) of the Environment Quality Act; biowaste must not be sent to a municipal or standard landfill site.
