The USDA Forest Service Alaska Region plans to issue a solicitation around March 2004 for maintenance, reconstruction, and construction work on approximately 900 miles of National Forest System Trails across the Chugach and Tongass National Forests. The contract work includes routine trail maintenance such as brushing, clearing, and drainage upkeep, as well as more intensive reconstruction or new construction projects involving trail tread, boardwalks, bridges, and other features. The notice provides prospective contractors the opportunity to inspect representative sample trails before winter weather makes access difficult, with these trails varying in class, terrain, required effort, remoteness, and mobilization conditions. Both motorized and mechanized equipment use restrictions vary by trail and designation, with some trails located within designated wilderness areas under specific agency controls. The representative sample trails cover diverse geographic and ecological conditions within the two forest regions. Examples include short trail sections like the Punchbowl Lake Trail and Rainbow Falls Trail on the Tongass National Forest, with features such as boardwalks and handrail replacements, as well as longer and more complex trails such as the Mt. Edgecumbe Trail, which allows limited motorized access. Chugach National Forest trails similarly range from short Class 1 ski trails to longer multi-class trails like Winner Creek and Ptarmigan Creek Trails, featuring constructed elements such as boardwalks, log stringer bridges, rock stairways, and waterbars. Potential bidders are encouraged to examine trail locations and conditions through available maps and on-site visits, and to contact designated Forest Service representatives for further technical specifications and details on additional trails that may be included in the solicitation.
