Glendale - Los Angeles Garden River Bridge

The City of Glendale is overseeing the construction of the Garden River Bridge, a 350-foot, three-span, curvilinear landscaped concrete bridge crossing the Los Angeles River. The project connects Flower Street and Fairmont Avenue in Glendale to North Zoo Drive in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. Designed for pedestrians, bicyclists, and maintenance vehicles, the bridge will feature two supporting piers in the river, dedicated circulation zones, shade structures, canopied seating, and extensive landscaping with raised and in-ground planting beds. Construction is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2025 and conclude in the spring of 2028, spanning approximately 2.5 years. The project has undergone extensive environmental review to ensure compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, resulting in a Mitigated Negative Declaration approved on June 9, 2026. Key technical requirements include the use of deep foundations to address expansive soils and adherence to the 2022 California Building Code. Environmental mitigation measures are established through a Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program, which includes pre-construction surveys for nesting birds, bats, and the California legless lizard, as well as daily monitoring for tribal cultural resources. Assessments indicate that the project will have less than significant impacts on air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and noise, and it is not expected to increase vehicle miles traveled.
