The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to construct a highway improvement project 0.3-miles north of the City of Bishop to address safety and environmental issues caused by semi-trucks parking along the shoulders of US Highway 6. The semi-truck parking has created hazardous conditions by blocking pedestrian and bicycle access to the paved and compacted dirt highway shoulders and by causing significant accumulation of trash and biological materials within the Caltrans Right-of-Way (ROW) on adjacent parcels and within North Fork Bishop Creek. To address these concerns, Caltrans proposes to install a striped 4-foot bike lane with a buffer, apply fog seal treatment, re-stripe the highway, and install a Type 5 standard wire fence with 15-foot wire mesh gates along the highway shoulder. The project intends to restore safe access for multi-modal highway use and reduce environmental damage.
