Project number: KSU-27S031
The Main University Library located on the Kent Campus was built in the 1960s and designed to house the campus system’s collection, offices, and archives. The vision of the University Libraries has changed with a major paradigm shift supporting digital scholarship and a space Masterplan was undertaken in 2010. The masterplan has been updated to guide strategic projects over the past decade that enhance the building experience for students, faculty, and visitors. The University Library is central to the institution’s strategic vision, evolving to meet the needs of 21st-century students and faculty in alignment with the changing role of academic libraries nationwide. Building on prior investments, including the recent tower elevator modernization, this project will reimagine the first-floor infrastructure and service areas, including the circulation desk, computer lab, and escalator connection between the first and second floors, to better support contemporary student and patron needs with more flexible engagement through multipurpose spaces. The building has undergone several investments in energy conservation projects, a partial building re-roof, infrastructure upgrades, as well as major restroom renovations over the last decade from local and alternative funding sources. Additional master plan initiatives, including collection consolidation and high-density storage in the basement, have created opportunities for expanded and improved use of library space.

Solicitation # RFP 27-42
The City of Charlottesville Public Works Capital Development Department is seeking qualified architectural and engineering firms for the renovation of the Jefferson Madison Regional Library Central Library, located at 201 E Market St, Charlottesville, VA. The project focuses on modernizing the 18,000 square foot historic facility, which was originally built in 1904. Other priorities include improving the facility's functionality by creating small meeting spaces, quiet reading rooms, and a dedicated teen area, as well as adding a larger generator and restoring two elevators to working order. The scope of professional services is divided into four phases: consultation and investigation, preliminary design, design development, and design for construction.
