The Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR) maintains over 5000,000 gross square feet of animal and research facilities involving numerous species of animals for biomedical research for the NIH community. The maintenance of a sanitized and or sterile environment for these research animals is a critical mission for the DVR and regarded as an essential element for the institutes utilizing the buildings. Animal facility cage wash personnel spend countless hours in sanitizing and decontaminating animal cages, racks and accessory equipment on a daily basis and those efforts are doubled following a disease outbreak. Background: The Office of Research Services (ORS) Office of the Director (OD) National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides maintenance services to the animal cage washing equipment. The central wash area in animal facilities is a major operational hub for the cleaning, sanitization, and sterilization of materials and equipment entering, leaving, and re-circulating through the animal facility. Effective sanitation of cages and cage components is accomplished by various cage and rack washers, such as the Tecniplast WP Rack/Cage washer, and is an important aspect of an animal care and use program to control the possible spread of unwanted microorganisms. These manufacturers support third party companies to purchase parts and provide technical direction for repairs on their equipment. According to Techniplast, USA, they do not support third party companies for preventative maintenance, sell parts that are proprietary or give technical direction on repairs to their equipment.
