Major Storm Damage and Flooding in Imperial County

Caltrans District 11 is preparing for an emergency response to repair extensive storm damage caused by Tropical Storm Juliette across multiple state highways in Imperial County, including State Route 78, 86, 98, 111, 115, and Interstate 8. The work focuses on restoring the functionality of drainage systems to ensure proper surface runoff and safeguard motorists, involving cleaning and repairing culverts, flushing blocked drains, removing debris from inlets and outlets, replacing damaged drop boxes, and clearing debris within the state’s right-of-way. Additionally, six trees at the westbound I-8 Sunbeam rest area in El Centro will be cut down, removed, and hauled away as part of the cleanup effort. The project is urgent and targeted at critical infrastructure locations to prevent further hazards from flooding and accumulated debris.
