Marine Biological Supply House for Research and Educational Institutions

The Department of Fish and Wildlife has authorized the Monterey Abalone Company to conduct year-round sampling of nearshore marine species, including coho salmon and Chinook salmon, under a permit issued for educational and research purposes. This authorization permits the use of specific fishing methods such as hook and line with surface, baited dropper loop, baited shrimp fly, and fish traps through December 31, 2027, to collect marine fishes, invertebrates, and algae. The collected specimens support a network of public aquariums, research centers, and universities across the United States by supplying live and preserved biological materials for educational exhibits and scientific study. The permit is granted under Fish and Game Code Section 2081(a), which allows limited take of protected species when conducted for approved educational or scientific purposes. The project is managed by California Fish and Wildlife Region 7 in Monterey, with Dylan Inskeep serving as the primary environmental scientist overseeing compliance and Emma Saso listed as the project applicant.
