The proposed project involves the construction and operation of a new transitional kindergarten (TK) through grade 8 public charter school campus at 2485 Apodaca Place (APN 002-180-234-000) within the Meriam Park planning area in the City of Chico, Butte County. The proposed project would be developed in two phases. Phase 1 would include installation of modular classroom buildings totaling approximately 17,472 square feet of gross building area, along with associated site improvements, to serve an initial enrollment of approximately 210 students, with a design capacity of up to 300 students (grades TK8). Phase 2 would involve construction of a permanent two-story classroom building with a footprint of approximately 23,000 square feet (approximately 46,000 square feet of total floor area across two stories). After completion of the permanent building, several of the Phase 1 modular structures would be removed. Three potential alternatives are under consideration for the existing TK/K modular buildings: retention in place; removal, with TK and K instruction relocated to the new permanent building; or removal and replacement with permanent classroom buildings of up to approximately 3,100 gross square feet at approximately the same location as the existing TK/K modular buildings. For purposes of bounding the environmental analysis, the replacement alternative is assumed.
