Metastasis Research Network (U54 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for the Metastasis Research Network under a U54 Specialized Centers mechanism, aimed at fostering a comprehensive understanding of cancer metastasis. Each center within the network is expected to propose a cohesive scientific theme that integrates two or three interdisciplinary basic research projects. These projects should employ integrative, systems-level approaches to uncover mechanistic insights into the complex, non-linear, and dynamic processes underlying metastasis. The themes should address key elements of the metastatic cascade, such as early dissemination, microenvironment interactions, dormancy, or therapeutic response mechanisms, reflecting the multifaceted nature of metastatic progression. The initiative welcomes research on all cancer types, including rare and pediatric metastatic cancers, emphasizing the goal of viewing metastasis as a whole-body, systems-level problem. This opportunity, not permitting clinical trials, aims to strengthen the Metastasis Research Network by establishing specialized centers that act as collaborative hubs to drive forward innovative research in this critical area. Applications are due by late September 2026, with the NCI providing support to advance the mechanistic understanding and potential therapeutic targeting of metastatic disease.
