Mira Costa High School Field Renovation, Lighting Improvement, and Facilities Master Plan

The project encompasses a range of facility improvements at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California, aligned with the District’s Facilities Master Plan. Key components include the reconstruction of the library, renovation of classroom buildings, the swimming pool, the multipurpose room, and the food service building, alongside the installation of two e-bike parking areas. A major focus is the athletic field lighting upgrade, which involves replacing existing lights at Waller Football Stadium in the northeast quadrant and installing new lighting at the West Field in the northwest quadrant and at the softball/baseball fields in the southwest quadrant. The entire 37-acre campus is included in the scope, but the project explicitly does not increase student enrollment, expand athletic facility capacity, or modify the fields themselves beyond lighting installations. The goal is to extend the hours during which existing athletic practices can occur without altering programming or increasing demand on facilities. All field lighting will be operated by automatic timers, ensuring that activities conclude by 9:00 p.m. and lights shut off no later than 10:00 p.m., maintaining compliance with community noise and light sensitivity standards. The project is managed by the Manhattan Beach Unified School District, with Dawnalyn Murakawa-Leopard, Deputy Superintendent, serving as the primary point of contact. The scope is carefully designed to modernize outdated infrastructure and improve usability during evening hours, while strictly avoiding any expansion of capacity or enrollment, ensuring alignment with local planning and environmental considerations.
