Full Description

The Mk21 AFA battery is a highly specialized customized component for the MMIII ICBM and has exacting size, weight and power restrictions, that if not met would adversely affect the center of gravity and mass of the MMIII weapon system, limiting mission effectiveness. A sustainment engineering assessment has concluded that the best solution is to build batteries using an experienced contractor with a proven track record of providing similar or currently fielded designs. This significantly reduces the risk of missiles being pulled from alert status. Identification of a viable source for these batteries is critical to ensuring they will be delivered in time to meet the demands of the operational fleet estimated to be NLT second quarter FY17.
