The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides funding for Book Chapter Processing Charges (BCPC) to support the publication of scientific book chapters in peer-reviewed edited volumes. To be eligible, the publication must be based on research where the SNSF funded at least 50 percent of the work, and at least one author must have received an SNSF grant or been employed in an SNSF-funded project. While the primary goal is to ensure immediate, free, and unrestricted Open Access (OA gold) publication, funding may currently be granted even if the volume is not open access, in which case the BCPC is intended to facilitate immediate open access for the specific chapter. Applications are submitted at any time via the mySNF online platform and must cite the original SNSF grant and include the publisher's invoice. The SNSF accepts the publisher's peer-review decision and generally pays the publisher directly, although refunds for previously paid charges are available if requested within six months of publication. There is currently no upper limit for the BCPC, though the SNSF may reduce unreasonably high charges. Funding is conditional upon the submission of required metadata and the inclusion of the SNSF's research funding in the publication's acknowledgments. The SNSF may exclude publishers that do not meet quality standards or the requirements of Swiss higher education institutions.

You can also receive funding from the SNSF for a single book chapter. It must be published in a peer-reviewed edited volume and be based on SNSF-funded research.
Edited volumes on specific topics or as follow-ups to conferences fulfil an important function in science communication. Have you written a book chapter that originated from an SNSF-funded project? We reimburse the publisher's services with a book chapter processing charge (BCPC). You can easily apply for open access funding via the mySNF online platform. During the ongoing transitional period, funding is also possible even if the book chapter is not published in an open access edited volume. In this case, the BCPC is intended for the immediate open access publication of your book chapter.
The book chapter must be published in a peer-reviewed edited volume. The SNSF accepts the publisher's peer review decision. The SNSF funded at least 50 per cent of the research on which your publication is based. The funding of an open access book chapter is reserved for researchers who have received an SNSF grant or who have been employed in an SNSF-funded project. At least one of these people must be listed as an author. In your application, you must cite the original SNSF grant. The application can also be submitted after the end of the project. The SNSF's funding of the research must be mentioned in the acknowledgements section of the publication.
You can submit your application at any time via the mySNF online platform – under "Science communication – Open Access book chapters". For the time being, the SNSF has not set an upper limit for the amount of the book chapter processing charge (BCPC). We may reduce unreasonably high BCPCs. The SNSF favours the direct payment of costs to the publisher. - Please send us the publisher's invoice together with your application. - After evaluation by the SNSF, payment will be made directly to the publisher. There is also the possibility to receive a refund for a BCPC which you have already paid. - Together with the application, please send us the publisher's invoice and proof of payment. - Once the SNSF has approved the request, payment will be made to the specified bank account. - This option is available for a maximum of six months after the publication date.

Grant
Open access book publications
Solicitation # uFmFFmMJGrnt1t49
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides funding for the gold open access publication of scientific monographs and edited volumes. This program reimburses Book Processing Charges (BPCs) to cover quality assurance, production, and distribution, provided the works have academic added value and are aimed at an academic audience. The base module covers publications up to 750,000 characters for a maximum of 15,000 Swiss francs, with additional supplementary modules available for increased length, special layout and image rights, enriched e-book features, and foreign language editing, each offering up to 5,000 Swiss francs. Funding is available to authors or editorial team members who meet specific employment or research criteria at Swiss higher education institutions. Starting January 1, 2027, the program will implement stricter rules: funding will be limited to books resulting from SNSF-funded research, except for doctoral theses and habilitations, and the base module maximum will be reduced to 12,000 Swiss francs. All publications must undergo a rigorous peer review process managed by the publisher, requiring at least one independent, external written review of the entire manuscript. The SNSF pays grants directly to the publisher in Swiss francs, provided that metadata is submitted and the work is published under a Creative Commons license with a DOI and ISBN. The SNSF is not a party to the contract between the author and the publisher and does not contribute to printing costs. Applications are submitted via the mySNF platform and are generally evaluated within two months.

Grant
Open access article publications
Solicitation # ozKDc97zu0ZBwCfJ
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides grants to cover publication costs for high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific research directly linked to SNSF-funded projects. Funding is specifically designated for the gold open access route, ensuring research is immediately available free of charge and without restrictions. Eligible funding includes Article Processing Charges (APCs) for journal articles, Book Chapter Processing Charges (BCPCs), and Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for monographs and edited volumes. Starting January 1, 2027, the upper limit for APCs is 3,500 francs, and the SNSF will no longer cover costs exceeding this amount. Funding for BPCs varies by module, with a basic module up to 12,000 francs and supplementary modules ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 francs based on character count. To qualify, articles must be published in fully open access journals of a recognized scientific standard; publications in hybrid journals and special issues are not funded. Eligible researchers must be part of an SNSF-funded project, and the grant number must be cited in the article's acknowledgments. The SNSF utilizes ChronosHub as a service partner for processing APC invoices, which, as of January 1, 2025, are paid directly to publishers rather than as refunds to authors. For BPCs, strict quality control is required, including at least one external independent written review of the entire manuscript. Applications are accepted year-round via the designated SNSF or partner platforms, provided that metadata is submitted and the work is deposited in approved repositories.
