The Swiss National Science Foundation and the Spanish State Research Agency have established a pilot cooperation to fund joint research projects between Swiss and Spanish scientific communities. This initiative utilizes a lead agency model where the AEI leads the 2026 call with a deadline of November 24 and a start date of September 1, 2027, while the SNSF leads the 2027 call with a deadline of October 1 and a start date in 2028. Projects must be bilateral, as trilateral proposals are prohibited, and must have a synchronized duration of either 36 or 48 months. Funding is managed independently by each agency according to their respective national schemes and eligibility requirements. Applicants must ensure there are no thematic overlaps with other projects and are limited to two simultaneous project funding grants, one of which must be part of a lead agency or international scheme. Notably, a specific exception to the standard 12-month rule is granted, allowing researchers to submit consecutive lead agency proposals with Spain. Certain thematic restrictions apply to AEI funding, particularly in clinical research, and applicants are advised to verify eligibility with the AEI.

The SNSF and the Spanish State Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación, AEI) are working to strengthen cooperation between the Swiss and Spanish scientific communities. Inspired by the Weave collaboration model, two calls will be launched during a pilot phase to enable research groups to submit joint research project proposals.Proposals must be submitted to the lead agency for the relevant call year: to the AEI in 2026 and to the SNSF in 2027. Applicants should check the current call information for the applicable deadlines. For the call led by the AEI with the deadline of 24 November 2026, the Spanish-Swiss proposal should be submitted to the AEI’s PID2026 call. In parallel, the Swiss research group should submit a copy of the same proposal to the SNSF via the mySNF platform within seven days of the AEI deadline. The duration of the projects is the same in Switzerland and in Spain, and the authorised duration is 36 months or 48 months. The project should start on the same date in both countries. Kindly note that for the call led by the AEI the starting date shall be the 1st of September 2027. Please note that certain areas (e.g., certain topics in clinical research) are not eligible for funding in the AEI Weave program. Please consult the AEI for information on thematical restrictions. Trilateral proposals are not possible. The pilot Weave process with Spain is part of the SNSF's Project Funding scheme. There is no additional budget, and the usual national eligibility and funding requirements apply. Researchers may only submit a proposal if there are no thematic overlaps with other proposals or ongoing projects. Applicants may have a maximum of two simultaneous project funding grants. One of these must be a Weave/Lead Agency/International Co-Investigator Scheme projectEach agency will fund its own national beneficiaries through its respective national funding schemes and calls. The SNSF and the AEI have agreed to alternate in the role of lead agency. Following the call led by the AEI at the end of 2026, the SNSF will take the lead for the call with the deadline of 1 October 2027. For the latter, Swiss applicants should submit the joint Swiss-Spanish proposal to the SNSF under the Project Funding scheme, and Spanish applicants should submit a copy of the proposal to the AEI. Please note that, for calls led by the SNSF, projects must start in 2028. This is an exception to the SNSF's standard rule requiring projects to begin within 12 months of the funding decision.
Practicalities:
Exception to the 12-month rule for Lead Agency proposals with SpainThe following exception applies to Lead Agency proposals with Spain: researchers who have submitted a Lead Agency proposal with Spain may submit another Lead Agency proposal with Spain within twelve months, provided that all other eligibility criteria are met. This exception applies exclusively to two consecutive Lead Agency proposals with Spain. For proposals involving other partner countries, the standard 12-month rule remains in force.

Grant
Open access article publications
Solicitation # ozKDc97zu0ZBwCfJ
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides grants to cover publication costs for high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific research directly linked to SNSF-funded projects. Funding is specifically designated for the gold open access route, ensuring research is immediately available free of charge and without restrictions. Eligible funding includes Article Processing Charges (APCs) for journal articles, Book Chapter Processing Charges (BCPCs), and Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for monographs and edited volumes. Starting January 1, 2027, the upper limit for APCs is 3,500 francs, and the SNSF will no longer cover costs exceeding this amount. Funding for BPCs varies by module, with a basic module up to 12,000 francs and supplementary modules ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 francs based on character count. To qualify, articles must be published in fully open access journals of a recognized scientific standard; publications in hybrid journals and special issues are not funded. Eligible researchers must be part of an SNSF-funded project, and the grant number must be cited in the article's acknowledgments. The SNSF utilizes ChronosHub as a service partner for processing APC invoices, which, as of January 1, 2025, are paid directly to publishers rather than as refunds to authors. For BPCs, strict quality control is required, including at least one external independent written review of the entire manuscript. Applications are accepted year-round via the designated SNSF or partner platforms, provided that metadata is submitted and the work is deposited in approved repositories.

Grant
Open access book chapters
Solicitation # Gc965aD10MCUHTn3
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides funding for Book Chapter Processing Charges (BCPC) to support the publication of scientific book chapters in peer-reviewed edited volumes. To be eligible, the publication must be based on research where the SNSF funded at least 50 percent of the work, and at least one author must have received an SNSF grant or been employed in an SNSF-funded project. While the primary goal is to ensure immediate, free, and unrestricted Open Access (OA gold) publication, funding may currently be granted even if the volume is not open access, in which case the BCPC is intended to facilitate immediate open access for the specific chapter. Applications are submitted at any time via the mySNF online platform and must cite the original SNSF grant and include the publisher's invoice. The SNSF accepts the publisher's peer-review decision and generally pays the publisher directly, although refunds for previously paid charges are available if requested within six months of publication. There is currently no upper limit for the BCPC, though the SNSF may reduce unreasonably high charges. Funding is conditional upon the submission of required metadata and the inclusion of the SNSF's research funding in the publication's acknowledgments. The SNSF may exclude publishers that do not meet quality standards or the requirements of Swiss higher education institutions.
