The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides grants to cover publication costs for high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific research directly linked to SNSF-funded projects. Funding is specifically designated for the gold open access route, ensuring research is immediately available free of charge and without restrictions. Eligible funding includes Article Processing Charges (APCs) for journal articles, Book Chapter Processing Charges (BCPCs), and Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for monographs and edited volumes. Starting January 1, 2027, the upper limit for APCs is 3,500 francs, and the SNSF will no longer cover costs exceeding this amount. Funding for BPCs varies by module, with a basic module up to 12,000 francs and supplementary modules ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 francs based on character count. To qualify, articles must be published in fully open access journals of a recognized scientific standard; publications in hybrid journals and special issues are not funded. Eligible researchers must be part of an SNSF-funded project, and the grant number must be cited in the article's acknowledgments. The SNSF utilizes ChronosHub as a service partner for processing APC invoices, which, as of January 1, 2025, are paid directly to publishers rather than as refunds to authors. For BPCs, strict quality control is required, including at least one external independent written review of the entire manuscript. Applications are accepted year-round via the designated SNSF or partner platforms, provided that metadata is submitted and the work is deposited in approved repositories.

The SNSF covers the costs of publishing your article in a fully open access journal. Simply submit the invoice to our service partner ChronosHub. Articles in hybrid journals are not funded.
Upper limit of 3500 francsFor all open access articles submitted to a publisher from 1 January 2027 onwards, the following applies: The SNSF will now cover publication fees (APCs) up to a maximum of 3500 francs. It will no longer cover higher costs, not even partially.Open Access Regulations (in force from January 2027)Open access: changes to funding for articles and books
Open Research EuropeThe SNSF is joining Open Research Europe. Starting in autumn 2026, all researchers in Switzerland will be able to publish their articles on this platform. This represents a milestone for Swiss science.News European open access platform: publish research results quickly and free of charge
By funding open access articles, the SNSF enables free access to publications. In this way, we support the dissemination of knowledge that originates from SNSF-funded research. You can receive funding if you make your article accessible free of charge via the gold road. The gold road to open access publishing is the direct publication of scientific results in a fully open access journal. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) gives an overview of quality-checked open access journals that work with peer review. The Journal Checker Tool provides information on how you can fulfil the SNSF's open access requirements for certain journals. We cover the publisher's services for quality assurance, production and distribution through the payment of an article processing charge (APC). The SNSF may reduce unreasonably high APCs. Please note: the SNSF does not provide funding for publications in hybrid journals. There is a paywall to read these journals. Researchers also have to pay a fee to ensure the free accessibility of their articles. This results in access to research findings being paid for twice. By choosing the hybrid route, you do, however, fulfil the SNSF's open access requirement. How can you receive funding for your article? Our service partner ChronosHub ensures easy processing of the publication charges. In just a few steps, you can forward your APC invoice to them for payment. You can find more detailed information about this process on the ChronosHub website.
The article must be published in a fully open access journal of a scientifically recognised standard (peer review). Only researchers who have received an SNSF grant or have worked as part of an SNSF-funded project are eligible for this funding. The article should be based on the results of the SNSF-funded project. At least one of these researchers must be listed as an author in the article. The funding of the research by the SNSF must be mentioned in the article’s acknowledgements. Please specify the grant number. Example: "This research was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) [grant number]."
As of February 2024, the SNSF is no longer funding OA articles published in special issues:
For the processing of publication fees (article processing charges, or APCs), the SNSF works with the service partner ChronosHub. You can forward your APC invoice to them for payment in just a few steps. You can find more detailed information about this process on the ChronosHub website.Since January 1st 2025, APC invoices will only be paid directly to the publishers, a refund of already paid invoices is no longer possible. If you have any questions about the processing of APCs, please contact our service partner directly. Solicitation # B9wb55x8qyNWmy1n
The SNSF Starting Grants 2027, administered by the Swiss National Science Foundation, provide high-level career funding for researchers across all disciplines to lead independent projects and research teams in Switzerland. The call opens on February 1, 2027, with a submission deadline of May 4, 2027. Eligible applicants must possess several years of post-doctoral research experience and a link to Switzerland, though those who have already achieved the objective of the call are ineligible. Funding includes project funds of up to 1 million Swiss francs for a maximum duration of five years, with additional coverage for the applicant's salary if it is not already secured. The earliest possible grant start date is May 1, 2028, and the latest is May 1, 2029. Proposals must be submitted in English via the SNSF Portal and include a research plan not exceeding 15 pages and 60,000 characters, a separate bibliography, a CV, and a mandatory confirmation letter from a Swiss host institution. Applicants must adhere to strict formatting guidelines and comply with standards for ethics, integrity, and open research data. While parallel submissions to other R3-level funding schemes like ERC Starting Grants are permitted, the SNSF must be notified immediately if another such application is approved.

Grant
Open access book chapters
Solicitation # Gc965aD10MCUHTn3
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides funding for Book Chapter Processing Charges (BCPC) to support the publication of scientific book chapters in peer-reviewed edited volumes. To be eligible, the publication must be based on research where the SNSF funded at least 50 percent of the work, and at least one author must have received an SNSF grant or been employed in an SNSF-funded project. While the primary goal is to ensure immediate, free, and unrestricted Open Access (OA gold) publication, funding may currently be granted even if the volume is not open access, in which case the BCPC is intended to facilitate immediate open access for the specific chapter. Applications are submitted at any time via the mySNF online platform and must cite the original SNSF grant and include the publisher's invoice. The SNSF accepts the publisher's peer-review decision and generally pays the publisher directly, although refunds for previously paid charges are available if requested within six months of publication. There is currently no upper limit for the BCPC, though the SNSF may reduce unreasonably high charges. Funding is conditional upon the submission of required metadata and the inclusion of the SNSF's research funding in the publication's acknowledgments. The SNSF may exclude publishers that do not meet quality standards or the requirements of Swiss higher education institutions.
