This contract involves the procurement and installation of a second P-Line HMI touch screen controller for the water bottle automation machine used in the Building 35/35A vivarium to ensure the production of clean, bacteria-free water bottles for rodents. The current controller, installed on the dirty side of the cagewash area, has presented operational challenges for staff working on the clean side, limiting their ability to efficiently control and troubleshoot the equipment. Adding this second controller on the clean side will enhance operational efficiency by enabling cagewash staff to better monitor, control, and manage the P-Line machine without the need to traverse back to the dirty side, thereby reducing downtime, PPE usage, and staff labor. The contract is a total small business set-aside issued by the National Institutes of Health under the Department of Health and Human Services. It is identified by solicitation number 75N98026Q00483, with proposals due by June 9, 2026. The installation location is Bethesda, Maryland. The improvement supports the overall animal care process by maintaining the reliable functioning of the water bottle automation system, which is critical for the health and welfare of laboratory animals. The point of contact for the solicitation is John Burton, reachable via the NIH contact email.

                                                                    Requirements

Requires the installation of a second P-Line HMI controller on clean side cagewash in order to effectively and efficiently operate the P-Line water bottle automation machine for producing clean bacteria-free filled water bottles for animals in he Building 35/35A vivarium.

AHCS uses a Tecniplast P-Line water bottle automation machine to process the bulk water bottles required to provide the rodents with clean and bacteria-free water. Installed in 2024, AHCS has recognized some difficulties manipulating the water bottle recapper and refiller from the clean side of cagewash, since the main controller is located on the dirty side. Installing this second controller on the clean side of cagewash will allow for efficient management and troubleshooting of the device, minimizing downtime, wasted staff time and PPE, and maximizing return on investment of the machine.

The requested clean-side HMI controller is directly tied to this animal-care function because it will allow cagewash staff to efficiently “monitor, control, manage, and troubleshoot the P-Line bottle automation machine from the clean side.” This will reduce PPE use, equipment downtime, and time spent traveling to the dirty-side controller. Effective operation of this machine is necessary to maintain efficient cagewash operations that support animal healthcare in the vivarium
