Parker Flat Cultural Management Project

The Parker Flat Cultural Management Project focuses on the stewardship of a 63-acre area within the Usal Redwood Forest, designated as a Cultural Resource Area to restore native grasslands and promote the growth of culturally significant plants through prescribed cultural fire. This initiative is designed to combat conifer encroachment, revitalize degraded habitat, and strengthen the ecological resilience of the land against wildfire, while also honoring and advancing Traditional Ecological Knowledge. The project actively involves local Native communities, providing them with training and employment opportunities and reestablishing deep cultural ties to the land through active participation in land management practices rooted in ancestral wisdom. Led by the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District in partnership with the Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc., the project will enhance the sustainability of the forest ecosystem and protect vital cultural resources while reducing wildfire risks for surrounding areas. The efforts are coordinated from Fort Bragg, California, and overseen by key contacts including Doug Turk, the Forestry Program Manager, and Karen Youngblood, the Forest Conservation Specialist. Public benefits include improved biodiversity, increased fire resiliency, and the preservation of sites of cultural importance, making this a collaborative endeavor that bridges ecological restoration with cultural revitalization for long-term regional benefit.
