Protected Left-Turn Signal at SR-18 and Knickerbocker Rd.

Caltrans District 8 is implementing a project to modify traffic signals at the intersection of State Route 18 and Knickerbocker Road in Big Bear, San Bernardino County, at Postmile 49.2. The primary objective is to improve traffic flow and reduce collision risks by installing dedicated and protected left turn phases for both eastbound and westbound directions of SR-18. The scope of work includes replacing existing signal poles and foundations and installing No U-turn signs on the signal mast arms. To minimize construction costs and environmental impact, the project will utilize most existing conduits and pull boxes, and all new poles will be placed in the same locations as the previous ones. All project activities will be conducted within the State right of way. A key requirement of the contract is the development of a Transportation Management Plan to minimize traffic disruptions during the construction period. The project is classified under NAICS code 237310 and is considered exempt under Class 1(c) Section 15301 as it involves minor alterations to existing public structures.
