The contract for valet parking services at the Dorn VA Medical Center is set to begin on August 1, 2014, with vendors expected to provide comprehensive parking management for a facility housing 218 beds. The service hours are from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm daily, with the last vehicle accepted at 4:30 pm. The vendor will be responsible for all signage, communication devices like walkie talkies, and the staffing schedule, which currently includes four valets. There is no designated manager’s office or booth for the vendor, and the valet staging area offers only one lane for incoming vehicles without electrical outlets. A secure area for storing traffic safety equipment is available nearby but not directly provided by the hospital. Vehicle flow control is managed through physical dividers separating the valet and overflow lots, with the overflow lot being adjacent but not recommended for use due to liability concerns. Vendors must ensure employees pass VA background checks, costing approximately $25 per individual, and must hold valid South Carolina driver's licenses regardless of prior licenses held. Internet access is provided, but there are no provisions for on-site storage facilities or break areas with amenities like microwaves or refrigerators. Valets shuttle vehicles between the staging and parking areas in under three minutes, with a shuttle service running every 15 minutes in typical weather. Although less than 125 vehicles are parked daily and few remain overnight, vendors must maintain a high level of customer service and professionalism. Security cameras on-site provide recordings for reviewing any misconduct allegations. The current contract has been in place for two years with no significant issues reported, emphasizing expectations for veteran-centered service over problem resolution.
