Quw'utsun Smuneem Elementary Addition

The project involves constructing a new two-storey, 1,683 square meter wood-framed addition to Quw’utsun Smuneem Elementary School, located in Duncan, BC, along with a 150 square meter renovation of the existing facility. The addition will include 10 new classrooms and a double-height gymnasium featuring a heavy-timber roof structure. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are to be newly installed and integrated with the existing building infrastructure. The renovation part transforms the current multipurpose room into a kitchen with supporting rooms. Site work will cover grading, landscaping, outdoor learning and play areas, potential installation of an outdoor kitchen canopy, and all necessary site servicing and utility connections, including upgrades to the school’s electrical service to support the expanded facility. Throughout construction, the school will remain fully operational, necessitating careful coordination, sequencing, and phased implementation of the work. The Cowichan Tribes plan to award a CCDC 2 contract to a General Contractor by March 2026, with site work expected to commence as soon as possible thereafter.
