AI Contract Overview
Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate awarded a competitive research and development contract, NNC10CA10C, to GE Aviation. The primary objective of this initiative is to develop advanced low NOx combustor technology that can achieve a 75 percent reduction in landing and take-off emissions compared to the ICAO standard adopted at CAEP 6. This effort is designed to accelerate aeronautics research and support national goals regarding noise, emissions, and vehicle performance without negatively impacting fuel burn or other emission levels. The project was initiated through Research Announcement NNH09ZEA001N and is structured as a cost share contract. This specific contract type was selected due to the high level of technical complexity and the presence of performance uncertainties that made it difficult to reasonably estimate total cost impacts. The work is supported by the NASA Glenn Research Center to expand the viable trade space for future vehicle design decisions.

Full Description
NASA Glenn Research Center has committed support for specific efforts under the AmericanRecovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Recovery Act funds for NASAs Aeronautics ResearchProgram will accelerate key research, enhance the state of aeronautics for the nation, and expand the viable and well-informed trade space for vehicle design decisions andenable simultaneous realization of National noise, emissions, and performance goals. Withthe NASA Research Announcement (NRA), NNH09ZEA001N, NASA sought proposals that willidentify new combustor concepts capable of meeting N+2 NOx goals.
The specific area of support for this work, per NASAs Recovery Act Program Plan forAeronautics Research, is to develop low emissions combustor concept capable of meetingthe LTO (landing and take-off) NOx emissions reduction goal while contributing to theachievement of the fuel burn goal and without negatively impacting other emissions. Thelow emissions combustor should be capable of meeting the N+2 LTO NOx goal of 75%reduction from the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standard adopted atCAEP 6 (Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection).
This is a cost share contract awarded under a full and open competition. The contracttype of Cost share was determined based on the high complexity of the work andperformance uncertainties that cannot be sufficiently identified or their cost impactsreasonably estimated.
