Reservoir Gaging at Ungated Spillways (RGUS) Project at R.W. Matthews Dam

The Reservoir Gaging at Ungated Spillways project involves the installation of a real-time reservoir elevation gage station at the R.W. Matthews Dam located in Trinity County, California. Managed by the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District, the project includes the deployment of a water level sensor, a data collection platform, solar power, and satellite telemetry equipment. The primary objective is to transmit hourly or sub-hourly reservoir elevation data to the California Data Exchange Center to enhance dam safety monitoring and provide early warnings of high-water conditions for the Division of Safety of Dams and downstream emergency management agencies. This initiative is funded through the California Department of Water Resources Real-Time Data Direct Grant Program. The project has been granted a CEQA categorical exemption under Class I for existing facilities. Administrative oversight is provided by Associate Engineer Annmarie Behan, and the work is performed at the R.W. Matthews Dam at Ruth Lake, identified as FERC Project No. P-3430 and State Dam No. 1013.
