Simon Fraser University is seeking qualified commercial contractors to replace two aging synthetic turf fields at its Burnaby Campus—Terry Fox Field and Athletic Field 4—with a target completion date of July 10th, 2026, for the former and August 14th, 2026, for the latter. The project involves the full removal and installation of new artificial turf across approximately 180,000 square feet of playing surface, requiring all labor, materials, equipment, and logistics necessary to deliver a safe, durable, and high-performance field. Both fields, originally installed in 2011 and 2004 respectively, have deteriorated significantly due to years of heavy use, weather exposure, and snow removal, resulting in safety hazards such as uneven surfaces, infill displacement, and diminished shock absorption. The replacement is critical to maintain the functionality of the university’s largest outdoor recreation space, which supports varsity athletics, student programs, clubs, and community events. Proposals must be submitted through MERX using Reference #0000318313 or Solicitation Number P308696CM, with the official RFP available on the MERX portal. The deadline for responses is May 25th, 2026, and inquiries should be directed to Wells Song, Contracting Authority, at wells_song@sfu.ca.

Established in 1965, with vibrant campuses in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey, SFU has become Canada's leading comprehensive university. With more than 30,000 students, 6,500 faculty and staff, and 130,000 alumni, SFU has matured into one of the world’s leading teaching and research universities, consistently ranked among Canada’s top comprehensive universities.Terry Fox Field and Field #4 at the Burnaby Campus are used by a plethora of user groups including Athletics & Recreation for varsity games and practices, SFU Recreation programming, student clubs and both internal and external community events. The fields, roughly 180,000 square feet combined is the largest open outdoor space for activities on campus. The replacement of the two synthetic turf fields due to their age and near failure of safety/condition assessments is being proposed. The current fields have reached the end of their lifecycle, and their deteriorating condition poses safety risks to users. By replacing these fields, we will ensure the provision of a safe and high-quality playing surface, benefiting athletics, sports organizations, and the community at large. The two synthetic turf fields in question were installed over a decade ago (Terry Fox Field = 2011; Field#4 = 2004) and their condition has significantly deteriorated over time. Continuous use, exposure to harsh weather conditions, and reoccurring snow removal have led to issues such as excessive wear, uneven surface, infill displacement, and reduced shock absorption. The project deliverables include the provision of all labour, material, equipment, transportation and other services related to the removal and replacement of artificial turf at Terry Fox Field and Field 4. See full project details in the RFP package.
