San Bernardino Avenue Widening Project

The San Bernardino Avenue Widening Project, managed by the San Bernardino County Department of Public Works, involves the full-depth reconstruction and widening of approximately 1.25 miles of roadway from Cherry Avenue east to Fontana Avenue in the City of Fontana. The project will establish an 80-foot curb separation, featuring excavation depths of up to 1.35 feet for the road surface and 4 feet for drainage structures. Key deliverables include pulverizing asphalt, cold planing, and the installation of ADA-compliant concrete ramps, driveways, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and spandrels. Additionally, the scope encompasses the relocation of traffic signals at five key intersections, the reconstruction of drainage facilities, and the installation of three concrete bus stop pads. The project requires significant site preparation and utility coordination, including the removal of approximately 35 mature trees and the demolition of three residential structures and one storage building to accommodate easement acquisitions across 54 parcels. Utility work involves relocating Southern California Edison power poles, A&T poles, fire hydrants, and various water and gas meters. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2027 with an estimated duration of 90 days. The project is environmentally cleared under California Environmental Quality Act sections 15301, 15302, and 15303, as it consists of minor alterations and replacements within existing right-of-ways without increasing traffic capacity.
