San Ysidro High School Gym Roof and HVAC Replacement Project

The Sweetwater Union High School District is initiating the San Ysidro High School Gym Roof and HVAC Replacement Project at 5353 Airway Road, San Diego, California. The project focuses on replacing an aging gymnasium roof and an inadequate HVAC system with a new single-ply roof assembly that meets Title 24 requirements and replacing standing-seam metal roof sections in high-roof areas. The scope of work includes replacing deteriorated flashing, curbs, and drainage elements, as well as installing new primary and overflow drains to correct existing deficiencies. To support the new rooftop HVAC units, the project involves verifying and reinforcing structural framing and anchorage, installing new mechanical equipment, curbs, pads, and associated ductwork, and implementing new electrical circuits, conduits, and controls. Additional improvements include the installation of hose bibbs for roof cleaning and the implementation of OSHA-compliant roof access provisions, such as a new roof access hatch, guardrail system, exterior ladder improvements, roof walk pads, and fall-protection tie-off posts. The project is designed to bring recreational amenities up to current State and District standards and ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. This maintenance and upgrade effort will not expand the gymnasium's capacity, student enrollment, building footprint, or operational hours, and it qualifies for categorical exemptions under CEQA Sections 15301, 15302, and 15303. The project is managed by the Director of Planning and Construction, Jason Brust, and is authorized under Resolution No. 5032.
