The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), using state and federal funding, is proposing to replace the Scott River Bridge in Siskiyou County on state route (SR) 96 from post mile (PM) 71.0 to 71.5. The purpose of this project is to provide a safe, sustainable, and traversable corridor to the public, reduce operational deficiencies, improve the condition of roadway assets associated with the Scott River Bridge, improve worker safety, decrease maintenance and repair costs. The project is needed because the bridge rail does not meet current safety standards, has narrow width shoulders, and has a deteriorated deck due to age, traffic loading, and the environment (freeze/thaw, deicing salts, and repaired flood damage). The existing bridge that is approximately 229 feet long and 32 feet wide would be removed and replaced with a new bridge that would be approximately 240 feet long and 44 feet wide and would be supported by two abutments and four pier columns (two at each pier). The new bridge would have two 12-foot-wide paved travel lanes and each lane would have an 8-foot-wide paved shoulder. The approaches to the new bridge would be on a realigned roadway shifted slightly to the north and would consist of two 12-foot-wide paved travel lanes and each lane would have up to an 8-foot-wide paved shoulder.
