Scott River Bridge Project

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), District 2 - Redding, is proposing the Scott River Bridge Project (EA 02-0H730) to replace the existing bridge on State Route 96 in Siskiyou County, from post mile 71.0 to 71.5 near Hamburg. The project aims to address operational deficiencies, improve worker and public safety, and reduce maintenance costs by replacing a deteriorated 229-foot bridge with a new 240-foot structure. The new bridge will be 44 feet wide, featuring two 12-foot paved travel lanes and 8-foot paved shoulders, supported by two abutments and four pier columns. The project also includes realigning the roadway approaches to the north with matching lane and shoulder widths. Construction is scheduled across two primary seasons, with 2029 focusing on mobilization, abutment and pier construction, and bridge deck installation, while 2030 will cover retaining walls, roadway tie-ins, and the removal of the old structure. Work is subject to strict seasonal windows, with in-water work permitted from June 15 to September 30 and above-water work from May 1 to October 15. The project adheres to CEQA guidelines, including a Mitigated Negative Declaration and Section 4(f) De Minimis Determination, and requires compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and specific stormwater management Best Management Practices due to the project's environmental footprint.
