Full Description

The San Gabriel Valley Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement (SGV CARE) Program currently provides two alternative mobile crisis response teams to respond to and improve the outcomes of non-violent service calls and proactively engage the community on mental health. These two teams are staffed by Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol Abuse (L.A. CADA). By dispatching a behavioral health specialist and substance use disorder counselor to non-violent service calls, the Program is designed to foster and build trust in communities, provide more community-based services, and free up law-enforcement to respond to the types of calls they are trained to handle. Importantly, the program proactively engages with the community around mental health resources to reduce the instance of mental/behavioral health crises from happening in the first place. SGV CARE teams currently serve five communities: Arcadia, La Verne, Monrovia, San Marino, and South Pasadena. Each SGV CARE Team is a two-person team that includes two individuals:• Behavioral health specialist (does not need to be fully licensed); and• Either a certified substance use disorder (SUD) counselor or certified peer support specialist. Each team has its own vehicle that can be used to transport clients in non-violent situations. The Program currently owns three purpose-built Ford Transit vans with a safety partition and ADA ramp. The vans provide a safe space for crisis de-escalation, respite from inclement weather, and transportation services. A selected service provider will be provided one of these vans through a no-cost lease and two additional vehicles will need to be leased. The Program is currently designed to support five SGV CARE teams, with each team serving participating cities in a regional capacity and not dedicated to a single city. The teams will be stationed in each city as outlined below, but their service area is subject to change as the program expands: • Team 1: Provides four ten-hour days of service and is based out of the City of La Verne. This team is currently staffed by L.A. CADA. • Team 2: Provides four ten-hour days of service and is based out of the City of Monrovia. This team is currently staffed by L.A. CADA. • Team 3: Will provide four ten-hour days of service and be based out of a to be determined (TBD) city or cohort of cities. • Team 4: Will provide four ten-hour days of service and be based out of a TBD city or cohort of cities. • Team 5: Will provide four ten-hour days of service and be based out of a TBD city or cohort of cities.
