Shaver Lake Viaduct

The Shaver Lake Viaduct project, managed by Caltrans District 6 in Fresno County, involves replacing a section of State Route 168 between highway post miles 48.9 and 49.7 with a viaduct structure. Under Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreement EPIMS-FRE-55044-R4, the scope of work includes the construction of a temporary detour road using a welded wire retaining wall, the removal of trees, vegetation, substrate, and gabion wall structures along the lake shore, and the management of groundwater seepage. Following construction, the project requires the restoration of temporarily disturbed areas through seeding, plantings, and the recontouring of the lake shore beneath the new viaduct. Amendment No. 1 updates the project description for the detour road and introduces additional avoidance, minimization, and reporting measures to ensure environmental compliance. The project is governed by Fish and Game Code section 1602 and adheres to a Mitigation Reporting or Monitoring Plan adopted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. A Notice of Determination issued on July 21, 2026, confirms that the project will not have a significant environmental effect within the jurisdiction of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, supported by a Mitigated Negative Declaration from the lead agency.
