The Smithsonian Institution intends to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to select a Multi-Disciplinary Architect-Engineer to provide concept, planning, design, and construction administration for the Smithsonian Institution's Bezos Learning Center (BLC) at the National Air and Space Museum on the site of the 1988 restaurant. The new BLC will feature an education center, food service, astronomy park with observatory and a reconfiguration of the existing loading dock. Design efforts will include collections handling areas, exhibit spaces, vertical transportation, hazmat abatement, blast and chemical protection, and biological and radiological (CBR) mitigation. The construction is planned to be procured utilizing Construction Manager as Constructor who is planned to be awarded by the 35% design submission. Early packages will be part of the design submission to allow construction to proceed and complete in 2026. Scope of work will entail confirmation of programming, studies, early construction packages, concept design, schematic design, design development, construction documents, and A/E Construction Phase Services as well as services to achieve USGBC - LEED and/or SITES certification. The total project costs for this effort is estimated to be $100M. This is not a request for proposals. The RFP for design services is targeted for publication in mid January 2022. Proposals will be due 30 days after issue of RFP. Requested materials must be submitted by the deadline in order to be considered.
