The Solomon Canyon Rumble Strip and Shoulder Widening Project, managed by the California Department of Transportation District 5, involves the improvement of 12.9 miles of State Route 1 in Santa Barbara County. The scope of work includes widening shoulders, installing rumble strips, replacing guardrails and utility poles, and raising the road profile. Specific environmental protections are integrated into the project, including the installation of a California tiger salamander exclusionary berm between postmiles 41.1 and 41.2 and the replacement of a paved roadside swale with a vegetated swale at post mile 41.73. The project is governed by a Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreement executed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife pursuant to Fish and Game Code section 1602. This agreement covers work within the bed, bank, and channel of 14 unnamed streams, including culvert lengthening and an amendment to allow for diversion and dewatering activities. A Notice of Determination confirms that the project was approved on July 29, 2026, based on a Mitigated Negative Declaration, concluding that there are no significant environmental effects within the jurisdiction of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
