The California Department of Transportation, using state and federal funding, proposes to replace the Sweetbrier Overcrossing (OC) bridge deck on Interstate 5 at PM 61.75 in Shasta County. Purpose The purpose of the project is to improve the bridge deck, preserve the structural integrity of the bridge, extend the useful life, reduce future maintenance and capital needs, decrease worker exposure, and provide a safe and reliable structure for all modes of travel and goods movement. The project will restore bridge health to a good condition. Need At the Sweetbrier OC (06-0115), traffic, tire chain wear, freeze/thaw exposure, and rebar corrosion from the use of deicing salts have resulted in deterioration of the bridge deck, which overall has resulted in poor bridge health. Additionally, the guardrail approaching the bridge does not meet current design standards and the paint on the steel girders has eroded.
