A Capacity Indicator for Hydrogen Getters

Imagine a hydrogen getter that tells you how much protective life it has left, simply by changing color, so engineers can read remaining capacity at a glance without ever opening the sealed device it guards. GetterGauge pairs that built-in gauge with a level of selectivity most getters cannot match, pulling hydrogen out of a sealed space while ignoring the helium, nitrogen, argon and methane around it and continuing to work. even at pressures a thousand times below atmospheric. Underpinning the color-change readout is a material that holds up to roughly three times more hydrogen than fielded products, works from below freezing to well above the boiling point of water, and needs no activation step before use. Because the material is friendly to plastics and polymers, it can be shaped to fit the device rather than forcing the device to fit the getter, opening the door to smaller, longer-lived and lower-cost sealed systems across electronics, medicine, aerospace and energy.

Challenges

Sealed and vacuum systems fail early when hydrogen accumulates inside them, because hydrogen corrodes metals, embrittles structural parts and can build toward a dangerous release. Getters exist to prevent that outcome, yet the versions on the market carry a stubborn set of limitations: The best ones store only about 350 cubic centimeters of hydrogen per gram, perform within a narrow temperature window, generally demand a separate activation step, lack selectivity against background gases and cost more than product designers would like. A second, quieter problem compounds the first: Once a getter is sealed inside a satellite, implant or waste container, there has been no non-destructive way to learn how much hydrogen it has already taken up. Engineers are left to guess at remaining protection, which forces a hard trade between replacing parts early on a cautious schedule and risking a silent loss of protection, and both choices add cost and uncertainty to equipment that is expensive to build and hard to reach.

Problems Solved

This new getter family answers the capacity and performance limits directly. Storage rises to as much as 1200 cubic centimeters per gram. The operating range widens to span below 0 through above 100 degrees Celsius. The materials capture hydrogen at very low pressures, thousands of times lower than the atmosphere pressure, without the customary activation step. Hydrogen is taken up selectively, even when helium, nitrogen, argon or methane is present and while allowing the uptake rate to be dialed in through catalyst loading. The feature that sets these getters apart, however, speaks straight to the inspection gap: A colorimetric response turns the material itself into a gauge, changing color or brightening as it absorbs hydrogen so that remaining capacity can be read visually and without destroying the part. A getter that reports its own remaining life converts the old guessing game into a simple visual check, letting operators retire a part when it is genuinely spent rather than on a conservative calendar.

Advantages

  • Reports its own remaining capacity through a simple, non-destructive color change, with no need to open or sacrifice the sealed part
  • Turns replacement from a cautious calendar guess into a visual check, so parts are retired only when genuinely spent
  • Delivers strong core performance in one package; up to roughly three times the hydrogen of conventional getters, a wide temperature range and no activation
  • Captures hydrogen selectively at pressures far below atmospheric, ignoring helium, nitrogen, argon and methane
  • Allows designers to tune the capture rate by adjusting catalyst loading to match the application
  • Blends into plastics and polymers for flexible shapes and smaller footprints

Market Applications

  • Nuclear Industry (tritium and deuterium capture and storage, waste containers, handling gloveboxes)
  • Microelectronics and Semiconductors (sealed and hermetic device packaging, vacuum components)
  • Aerospace and Space Systems (satellites)
  • Medical Devices (implantable devices)
  • Scientific and Medical Imaging Equipment (X-ray tubes, particle accelerators)
  • Thermal Insulation and Energy Efficiency (vacuum-insulated panels and devices)

Agricultural Based Liquid De-Icer
Solicitation # SRC000470
The North Dakota Department of Transportation issued Invitation for Bid SRC000470 for the procurement of an agricultural based liquid deicer in concentrate form. The product must be a natural, renewable resource derived from the sugar beet plant or an approved equal, designed for use in de-icing, anti-icing, prewetting, and treating salt or sand stockpiles. Technical specifications require the concentrate to have a minimum solids concentration of 60 percent, a freeze point of at least -9 degrees Fahrenheit, a specific gravity between 1.28 and 1.38, and a maximum of 3 percent naturally occurring chlorides. The product must be biodegradable, non-toxic, and completely water miscible, and it must not contain Magnesium Chloride or Calcium Chloride. An anti-foaming agent must be provided at no additional cost, and bidders are required to submit Material Safety Data Sheets with their responses. The estimated annual requirement is 700,000 gallons, with delivered pricing based on an estimated minimum order quantity of 4,500 gallons. Award will be made on an all-or-none basis to the responsible offeror with the lowest priced bid that meets all specifications, with preference given to resident North Dakota offerors in the event of a tie. Bids must be submitted electronically via NDBuys by October 15, 2026, at 2:00 PM CT. The contract is governed by the North Dakota Century Code and includes requirements for proof of insurance and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Payments are generally issued within 45 calendar days of receiving a correct invoice, and the state maintains a sales tax exemption under number E 2001.

Simulator Collection for Atomic to Continuum Scales (SCACS)
Solicitation # S-196281
The Simulator Collection for Atomic to Continuum Scales (SCACS) is an AI-driven multiscale simulation platform developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory to predict spatially varying, direction-dependent thermal and electrical transport in systems of up to one million atoms. By bridging the gap between computationally expensive high-fidelity physics models and simplified engineering-scale tools, SCACS embeds machine-learned physics directly into finite element workflows. The platform utilizes proprietary Site-Projected Thermal Conductivity (SPTC-AI) and Site-Projected Electronic Conductivity (SPEC-AI) modules, alongside FEniCSx-based solver modules (sptc2fem and spec2fem), to generate precise temperature and current maps. This approach allows engineers to identify localized hot-spots and transport pathways while reducing simulation runtimes from days to minutes. Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4 with a pending U.S. patent and associated software T5032, SCACS is offered as a licensing opportunity through the Richard P. Feynman Center for Innovation. The technology is designed for seamless integration with industry-standard solvers like Abaqus and has broad commercial applications in semiconductor advanced packaging, fusion energy systems, aerospace, battery storage, quantum device manufacturing, and biosensors. This special notice, solicitation number S-196281, invites interested parties to pursue exclusive or non-exclusive licensing agreements to accelerate material qualification and hardware innovation.
