The University of Alberta has issued a presolicitation notice under solicitation number AB-2026-06170 for the procurement of a PromethION 24 DNA/RNA Sequencer. This equipment is required to support specialized research in microbial ecology, epigenetics, and DNA/RNA base modification analysis. Due to the unique technical requirements of the project, including the need for native sequencing technology and real-time adaptive sampling, Oxford Nanopore Technologies has been identified as the sole supplier capable of meeting these specifications. Oxford Nanopore Technologies is the exclusive manufacturer and patent holder of the sequencer, associated software, flow cells, and reagents. Because no alternative suppliers can provide compatible products or the necessary manufacturer warranty, the university is recommending a sole-source award to this provider. The notice was posted on September 4, 2026, with a response deadline of September 14, 2026.

The Department recently looking for PromethION 24 DNA/RNA Sequencer to support research in epigenetics, microbial ecology and DNA/RNA base modification analysis. Oxford Nanopore Technologies(ONT) is the only supplier that meets the specific technical and research requirement of this project. ONT’s native sequencing technology enables comprehensive detection of DNA and RNA base modifications, including 5mC, 5hmC, 4mC, and 6mA, as well as native RNA sequencing. These capabilities are essential to the epigenetics research program. The adaptive sampling capability allows sequencing to be monitored and selectively enriched or excluded in real time, providing significant advantages for targeted genomic and microbiome research. ONT holds the patents for its sequencing technology and is the sole manufacturer and supplier of the required sequencer, reagents, flow cells, and associated software, as well as the manufacturer’s warranty. Therefore, compatible products and services cannot be sourced from alternative suppliers. Based on the unique technical requirements of the research I will recommend Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
