AI Contract Overview

The Upper Falls Covered Bridge Project involves repairing damage caused by the floods in July and December 2023 along the Black River in Weathersfield, Vermont. The floods compromised the stability of the stream slopes at the northern abutment of the historic covered bridge, removing protective rock slope materials and scour protection systems, thereby increasing the risk of further deterioration and scour damage during future flood events. The project aims to restore these protective systems and implement mitigation measures to prevent similar damage in the future, while retaining and reusing the existing bridge superstructure and substructure components. The scope includes site work such as excavation and embankment reconstruction to support the repairs. The contract, issued by the Town of Weathersfield under the Vermont agency, is valued between $500,000 and $1,500,000 and is open for responses until December 5, 2024. The solicitation emphasizes the importance of restoring the stability of the streambank and protecting the abutment from future flood-related scour, ensuring the longevity of the historic bridge. The primary point of contact for the project is Brandon Gulnick, reachable via email or phone, and additional project details are accessible through the Vermont Business Registry.

Full Description

The Vermont floods of July and December of calendar year 2023 damaged the existing stream slopes at the northerly abutment of the covered bridge spanning the Black River along Upper Falls Road. The floodwaters caused a slope failure of the streambank, removed the rock slope protecting material along the streambank and removed the rock scour protection system from the bridge abutment foundation at the northerly abutment. The slope surface is no longer stable, the slope is unprotected from further deterioration during flood events and the abutment is no longer adequately protected from scour. The goal of this project is to repair these systems and to install mitigation measures to reduce damage to the site resulting from future floods. The existing superstructure (covered bridge) and substructure (abutments and wingwalls) will be retained and reused with no changes. The project includes related site work, excavation and embankment reconstruction.
