The U.S. Army RDECOM Acquisition Center, on behalf of the U.S. Marine Corps, issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking industry input on capabilities and methods for recycling and reusing materials found in body armor and related equipment. This effort targets materials such as ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), para-aramid fibers, and ceramics including silicon carbide, boron carbide, and aluminum oxide. The notice emphasizes that this is solely an information-gathering step, with no solicitation or contract award at this time, aiming instead to inform the development of a future acquisition plan. The government specifically requests details on industry interest, recycling methodologies, and material reutilization practices to support body armor demilitarization, salvage, and recycling initiatives. Respondents are encouraged to provide information voluntarily by March 21, 2007, with the understanding that submissions will not guarantee any contract award or compensation. All proprietary information will be protected according to government regulations. The request falls under NAICS code 562910 (Waste Management and Remediation Services) and related manufacturing and textile sectors. The objective is to better define government requirements and facilitate future procurement actions related to the environmentally responsible disposal and material recovery from body armor components. The point of contact for responses is the project engineer at Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center.
