AI Contract Overview
NASA's Kennedy Space Center is seeking to acquire a final design, documentation, and fabrication of the Utah Reusable Root Module (URRM), a flight-ready, reusable space crop rooting module intended for integration into NASA's Ohalo III test rig on the International Space Station. This module is part of a demonstration to support continuous crop production in space environments. The contract will be awarded on a sole-source basis to Utah State University, which initially developed the URRM technology under a NASA research grant. USU's specialized skills, knowledge, and expertise make them uniquely qualified to complete the final design, fabrication, and delivery of the hardware, and no other vendors are considered capable of fulfilling this requirement. NASA does not plan to acquire this hardware as a commercial product or service, and interested organizations are invited to submit their capabilities and qualifications electronically by February 25, 2025, to Tammy Clark. The responses will be evaluated solely to determine whether the procurement should be conducted competitively, although the decision to proceed with sole sourcing remains at NASA's discretion. The procurement process is governed by NASA's policies, including the applicable Ombudsman clause, and the project will be performed in Logan, Utah. This effort is classified under NAICS code 541715, relating to research and development in engineering and physical sciences.
