More Info of Service: The Hoover Dam sluice gate operation/exercise typically takes just one day(7a-330p) if all goes well. The diver’s boat can use the Walnut St boat ramp(7940 S Sunbury Rd 43081) to splash their vessel. It can then proceed S on the reservoir to meet us at the dam at approx. 7:30am. Both the E and W gates will be operated during the exercise so the below will need to be done for both the East and West gates. Diver inspects the tracks on the upstream side of the dam. Diver confirms that the sluice gate and tunnel entrance are clear and free. Meets the parameters for the exercise. Diver/s help guide the stop log into place when lowering it by crane from the bridge deck through deck hatch to the sluice guide rails. Diver’s boat wants to stay clear during the lowering of the stop log. Exercise is typically done in during lower reservoir water levels so they can stand on the concrete dam abutment to help here. Diver confirms the stop log is in place on the upstream side of the gate. The gate is opened by Watershed Management. Diver supervisor participates in the lock out tag out of the HPU for the sluice gate operation. Bunger valves are shut down by an onsite Hap Cremean WP operator. Diver enters the stilling pool(~5’ deep) below the dam and proceeds to the sluiceway tunnel - enters tunnel for inspection and pictures of the tunnel and clears tunnel. Past divers have done this in a wet suit only. Gate is lowered after lock out tag out is removed from the HPU. Diver confirms that the gate is seated and clears the stilling pool. Bunger valves are turned back on after the diver has cleared the stilling pool. Dive team helps guide stop log on removal by the crane. Hatch is replaced by crane. Above steps are repeated for the operation of the 2nd gate – typically we do the W gate first followed the E gate.
