The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is inviting innovative proposals for the preservation and adaptive reuse of the historic Federal Building at 50 United Nations Plaza in San Francisco, California. This notable six-story structure, completed in 1936 in the Beaux Arts style by prominent architect Arthur Brown, Jr., is a key component of the Civic Center landmark district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building encompasses approximately 350,000 gross square feet and is situated at the corner of Hyde and McAllister Streets, with its main entrance facing United Nations Plaza, a bustling pedestrian and market area. As the building no longer serves a viable Federal function, the GSA seeks private investment to restore and repurpose it through a long-term outlease arrangement under Section 111 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1976, while retaining ownership within the Federal inventory. Interested parties are encouraged to submit financially feasible adaptive use concepts that respect the building’s historic character. The Request for Qualifications and Adaptive Use (RFQ&U) has been released publicly to solicit such proposals. Copies of the RFQ&U can be obtained by contacting Zhanna Odesskiy, a Realty Specialist with the GSA’s Pbs R9 Leasing Division in San Francisco. This opportunity highlights the GSA’s commitment to preserving historically significant federal properties while fostering creative private sector development that benefits the local community and economy.
