This sources sought notice, solicitation number W911QY-XYZ-MotionStage, was issued by the Department of Defense through the W6QK Acc-Apg Natick office for an XYZ-motion stage. The project is based in Natick, Massachusetts, and falls under NAICS code 333314. The solicitation was posted on April 19, 2019, with a response deadline of April 24, 2019. A key technical clarification provided in Amendment 0001 addresses the dimensions of the vacuum chamber and the Z-axis travel stage. While the internal dimensions of the vacuum chamber are confirmed at 24x24x24 inches, the government acknowledges that the actual operational travel distance of the Z stage will be reduced to approximately 15-21 inches once the XY stage and other necessary components are installed. Despite this operational limitation, the government maintains the 24-inch travel requirement to ensure additional material length and flexibility.

Full Description

Amendment 0001: Question 1: How is it possible to have a 24 inch travel stage (Z axis) inside a 24"x24"x24" vacuum chamber? Are these requirements and/or chamber dimensions correct? Answer 1: The internal dimensions of the vacuum chamber are correct (i.e. 24"x24"x24"). Since the height of the chamber is 24", a travel distance of 24" was selected. It is true that with a mounted XY stage on top of the Z stage the travel distance (Z) will be less than 24", because the XY stage (and things on top of the stage like the samples, a heater, a plate, etc.) all occupy some height. Thus while in operation, the Z stage will realistically only travel maybe 15-21"; however, some extra material/length and flexibility is anticipated to be required by the Government.
