The Townsend Ranger District of the Helena National Forest is preparing to solicit bids for the Magpie Gulch Placer Bench Cuts Project, a restoration construction effort focused on reversing the environmental impacts of historic placer mining in the Magpie Gulch watershed located in the Big Belt Mountains of Broadwater County, Montana. The project involves replacing fill material, reshaping slopes, applying topsoil, and seeding to restore two previously mined areas. To provide potential bidders and interested parties with a clearer understanding of the site conditions and project requirements, a pre-bid tour was scheduled for November 12, 2002, allowing participants to visit the work area, view boundary markings, and discuss travel routes with a Forest Service guide. This tour aims to address potential access challenges since the area may become less accessible during the formal solicitation period. The formal solicitation was expected to be advertised in the spring of 2003, with work starting in June or July of that year. Estimated project costs range between $25,000 and $100,000. Bid packages would be released in January 2003, giving contractors ample time to assess the scope and prepare their proposals. For additional information or self-guided site visits, interested parties could contact representatives at the Townsend Ranger District or the Helena National Forest Supervisor's Office. The contract falls under the Department of Agriculture and is managed out of the Custer Gallatin National Forest office in Bozeman, Montana.
