Located in a remote, high-alpine environment above 9,000 feet, the work is subject to a limited construction season of four to five months per year. The contract includes two optional schedules: Option V for pre-grubbing, seeding, and erosion control along a 1.2 mile extension, and Option W for grading, draining, and paving 1.2 miles of roadway. The estimated total cost for the base schedule and both options ranges between 5 and 10 million dollars. Construction was slated to begin in 2010 and conclude in 2011, requiring strict adherence to environmental protections and historical preservation standards.
