What does Department Of Game & Fish do?

The Department of Game & Fish is tasked with managing and conserving New Mexico’s wildlife resources and natural habitats through science-based stewardship and public recreation programs. Its core mission centers on sustaining healthy fish and game populations, restoring critical ecosystems, and supporting responsible outdoor access. Strategic priorities include habitat enhancement, wildlife population monitoring, range management, and infrastructure maintenance for public use, particularly in remote and ecologically sensitive areas. Key programs focus on species-specific conservation—such as bighorn sheep and cougar management—alongside the operational support of shooting ranges, water systems, and enforcement capabilities. The agency balances ecological integrity with sustainable recreational use, ensuring long-term resource availability for both wildlife and the public. Procurement patterns reveal a strong reliance on specialized environmental and operational services, including ecological consulting, habitat restoration, and wildlife management support. The agency frequently acquires equipment and infrastructure related to water management, range maintenance, and facility operations, often through direct solicitation without set-asides. Contracts are typically structured as service-based engagements rather than commodity purchases, emphasizing technical expertise and field implementation over off-the-shelf solutions. Primary NAICS categories include environmental consulting services, farm management services, and heavy civil construction, reflecting a focus on ecological engineering and land stewardship. The agency also procures niche services such as helicopter support for wildlife surveys, specialized gas supplies for field operations, and uniform manufacturing for field personnel. Vendor relationships are built on technical proficiency in wildlife biology, range science, and remote infrastructure installation, with no preference indicated for small business or diversity set-asides. The Department of Game & Fish operates under the state of New Mexico as a standalone agency with statewide jurisdiction over wildlife, fisheries, and public hunting/fishing areas. It utilizes standard federal and state procurement vehicles, primarily issuing direct solicitations for specialized services requiring domain-specific expertise in natural resource management.
