135th and Aviation Sports Complex

The Wiseburn Unified School District is initiating the 135th and Aviation Sports Complex Project, a development located on a 4.9-acre site at 13500 Aviation Boulevard in Hawthorne, California. The project involves the demolition of existing facilities and the relocation of an alternative education program to make way for comprehensive athletic improvements. Key infrastructure includes a synthetic turf soccer field featuring a full-size pitch and two youth fields, a fast-pitch softball field with synthetic turf and bleachers, a baseball field, two batting cages, two buildings for concessions and restrooms, and 33 off-street parking spaces. The site will undergo significant earthwork, including the excavation of 1,585 cubic yards of soil and the addition of 3,542 cubic yards of clean soil, with grading designed to establish a specific northeast-to-southwest drainage pattern. Construction is scheduled to commence in March 2025 and is expected to span approximately nine months. All facilities must adhere to strict regulatory standards, including NFHS and CIF requirements for athletic fields, the 2022 California Building Standards Code, CALGreen, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Additionally, project plans are subject to plan-checking by the Division of the State Architect. The project has been granted a Categorical Exemption from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) as an in-fill development project. To mitigate environmental impacts, the district will implement construction Best Management Practices to protect biological resources, water quality, air quality, and community noise levels. The completed complex is intended to serve both District sports programs and community organizations such as Little League Baseball and youth soccer groups.
