The Department of Homeland Security’s Coast Guard is conducting market research to identify vendors capable of supplying commercially available polyether polyurethane rudders as potential replacements for the existing steel rudders on the 110 WPB Island Class Cutters. The objective is to enhance durability and reduce maintenance by switching to a polyether polyurethane foil type rudder. The rudders must meet specific design and material criteria, including the use of high-strength, non-magnetic stainless steel rudder shafts with a tungsten carbide thermal spray weld applied in critical areas. Detailed vessel and rudder stock specifications are provided, along with estimated rudder forces and torque based on ABS High Speed Craft rules. Prospective vendors are asked to provide detailed information about their products and services, including whether they currently offer suitable commercial units or can modify existing products to meet specifications. Questions address aspects such as product testing, quality control, manufacturing location, lead times, warranty terms, and recommendations for material hardness and coatings to withstand cavitation and erosion conditions behind the propellers. The Coast Guard emphasizes that this request is for informational purposes only and will not result in contract awards or payments for submitted information. Vendors are encouraged to submit comprehensive literature and documentation to assist in the market research process.
