AI Contract Overview
The U.S. Forest Service is conducting a Sources Sought Request for Information (RFI) to identify capable timber operators and fuels contractors interested in hazardous fuels reduction treatments and timber harvest in the Wildland Urban Interface on the LaCroix Ranger District, Superior National Forest, Minnesota. The project encompasses four treatment areas totaling approximately 2,103 acres and involving about 16,790 MBF of timber volume. The scope includes timber removal via methods such as clearcut, shelterwood, and commercial thinning, as well as related services like temporary road construction and obliteration, slash piling, fuel break establishment, and hazardous fuel reduction activities including mastication, mulching, chipping, and cut and pile operations. The contract targets low-value timber harvest with a focus on improving forest health and reducing wildfire risk in difficult-to-access areas. Interested parties are invited to submit capability statements detailing company information, relevant experience in timber harvest and fuels treatments in northern Minnesota, safety programs, equipment availability, and crew qualifications. Responses to a project questionnaire addressing interest in specific areas, feasibility of timelines, anticipated challenges, and suggestions for project improvement are requested. The RFI clarifies that this is for market research only and does not guarantee future solicitation or funding. Responses are due by June 1, 2026. An open house informational meeting to discuss the opportunity will be held on May 20, 2026, both in-person at the LaCroix Ranger District office and virtually via Microsoft Teams, allowing potential contractors to learn more and engage with staff prior to submitting their statements. The anticipated formal solicitation is expected by spring 2027, with contract performance to be completed by May 2031.
