The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, managed by Battelle Memorial Institute for the U.S. Department of Energy, is exploring potential suppliers capable of manufacturing approximately sixteen self-propelled mobile radiation detector units designed for sea port use. These units, termed Straddle Carrier Radiation Detectors, will be ground-based and capable of scanning one to four vertically stacked standard sea containers for gamma and neutron radiation sources. They must offer both gross gamma counting and spectroscopic capabilities and feature integrated data processing and wireless communication systems to send and receive scanning data to centralized servers in real time. The detectors are intended for deployment at various global seaports, ensuring enhanced radiation screening of maritime cargo. This notice serves as a sources sought announcement rather than a formal solicitation, aiming to identify qualified companies with relevant experience and capacity to produce these specialized detectors. Interested parties are requested to submit company information including contact details, qualifications, and business data within 30 days. Participation is voluntary with no obligation or cost to the government, and no contracts will be awarded based on this notice alone. The procurement process is anticipated to proceed with an official solicitation expected in early 2008, and any gathered information may be used to facilitate competitive bidding in that future action.
