NASA Glenn Research Center is seeking information from potential partners for the Technology Demonstration Missions Program regarding a concept to beam energy between spacecraft in space. Specifically, the request focuses on vendors' capabilities to develop a laser and/or adaptive optics system to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS), which will provide 3kW of electrical power at 120vDC with limited thermal cooling. The laser system's function is to transfer energy to a free-flying spacecraft located up to 60 kilometers away, requiring adaptive optics to precisely locate and track the receiver. The receiver will use photovoltaic cells tuned to the laser frequency to minimize energy loss. All equipment must be qualified for the low Earth orbit environment and withstand launch rigors, with commercial off-the-shelf hardware considered acceptable upon passing qualification tests. This Request for Information is strictly for planning and informational purposes and does not constitute a contract or guarantee of award. NASA invites responses that include general cost estimates, technical capability statements, and comments on the specifications, emphasizing contributions that might improve the demonstration, such as parts of the laser or adaptive optics systems, integration expertise, or qualification processes. Respondents are asked to include details about product commercial status and provide company technical contacts. Responses are due by May 13, 2011, and will be used solely to inform future planning and budgeting. NASA encourages interested parties to submit questions to the designated technical contact while noting that no official solicitation currently exists, and it is the responsibility of potential offerors to monitor official government acquisition channels for any future solicitations.
